Patients need to have an extensive oral and dental examination prior to fabricating the mouth guard. All needed restorations and removal of teeth preferably take place prior to fabrication of mouth guard as the overall measurement of the patient upper and lower arches might change significantly.For young patients mouth guard might needed to be checked for the size and be replaced as the child mouth and dentition might change
